less is more

I had a long post about minimalism half written, but the irony was too much.

The more we pack away in boxes, the more I like certain parts of our apartment and the easier I'm finding it to get the simple things in life done (when climbing the box maze that we have built isn't part of the task, that is...). Doing the dishes is a lot easier when you only have two pots and two plates. We are really trying to prioritize and ditch some stuff during this move.

Simplify.

How do you get organized?

Would you ever consider taking the 100 Thing Challenge?

  1. I'm giggling at "the irony was too much." :)

I need to take a page out of your book and a lesson from this. It's not that I'm unwilling to part with things, but that the task of sorting and discarding seems so mundane. If someone offered to come haul a bunch of stuff to the goodwill/garbage/etc. for me, I'd send bags & bags & bags. It's the time-consuming process that deters me.

But I know that the more organized and less cluttered feeling that would result would be worth it. Now--looking into this 100 Thing Challenge!

  2. Since we got married, we've both been really good about parting with things. A good rule of thumb is if I've completely forgotten about it and didn't realize I still had it, then I probably don't need it.

One thing that's helped us is asking for "activity" gifts for Christmas and our birthdays. For example, tickets to something instead of a pile of books and DVDs.

  3. i know exactly what you mean about ditching stuff during a move. when chris and i moved, i couldn't wait to start throwing things out and donating to the goodwill! i mean, it's not like i can't do that now, but it's harder to do when you don't NEED to have less stuff!

how do i get organized? i don't. you should see my desk and closets.

  4. I had never heard of the 100 Things Challenge before... A very interesting and humbling idea.

  5. i love simplicity, and i would love to get rid of most of the things i own. as time goes on i try to sell things I don't need or just donate them, I always magically feel better afterwards...i think being organized and simple leads to a happy life, i am convinced of it!

  6. Claire: I totally agree!

Paige: Totally! For example, right now we have a few boxes left that haven't been unpacked. I couldn't tell you what's in them and should probably just get rid of all of their contents! But will I? Yikes. Probably not!

Danielle: Haha. Me either. My desk = disaster. My closet = certifiable disaster right now.

Rachel: I don't think I could do it, but I'd like to try to pare down a lot more!

Maria: Yes! Cleaning things out always feels sooooo good!

  7. this is something that i'm totally struggling with right now as well - I went from a huge 2 bedroom, kitchen/living room/familyroom apartment, to a barely larger than a bachelor... and i'm STILL trying to pare down. it's such a challenge, but a freeing one. i'm not sure i could ever do 100 items, but i do think focusing more on quality vs quantity has become a huge part of my life.
