a few new things...

I came across these absolutely beautiful rutilated quartz crystal points and wanted to make something really striking with them. "Rutilated" crystals have mineral deposits trapped within the clear quartz, creating streaky needles of colour. In the case of these crystals the rutilation appears as forest greens, light pinks, and opaque whites. These tiny points are just 1/8" wide and of varying lengths. Six of them make up a substantial pendant, and they are bracketed by vintage faceted brass beads. I've finished the piece with gold tone curb chain that I got while I was in New York this summer.

These necklaces are quite a bit shorter than the ones I usually make, but I think the details of the crystals are better highlighted this way. My favourite thing about these necklaces is that each one is totally different from the last. It's fun to put together the crystals on the gold bar until you get just the right combination. 

I'm also happy to have some new baltic birch pieces available in the shop. Inspired by fall (which is quickly turning into rainy winter) I've created these asymmetrical leaf earrings (finished with sterling silver and also available with 14k gold filled findings). recycled jewelry

I've been making these necklaces lately out of thrift store finds and vintage pendants and chains. Inspired by a crazy necklace that my friend Camilla was wearing when she came for a visit from Montreal, I've been collecting a variety of interesting chains to use on these super long necklaces (about 36"). Pendants are made up of upcycled earrings, necklace pendants and beads and vintage pieces that I've found on sites like Etsy. Camilla's necklace had so much stuff on it that it maxed out the chain. I like to think of these ones as works-in-progress. If you found another awesome thing you could easily add it. Click on any of the photos to learn more about the pieces on Flickr.

benefits

One of the benefits of living in Vancouver is that you have so many beaches that are IN the city to choose from, this is pretty different from Halifax and Calgary (obviously), the other Canadian cities that I've lived in. Also when you're in Vancouver, on one of these urban beaches, you are likely going to be surrounded by twelve pound puffballs that will let you carry them around. They like it. Here is my friend Natalie with her new friend Jimmy (a girl dog) at Kits beach. Jimmy was too lazy to play with the other dogs and seemed to prefer being held like a baby by humans anyway.

Also, I've been practicing and practicing making new jewelry for Sadie and I think I'm finally getting the hang of it. This is just a little sneak peak of something that I hope is coming soon. For now I call it "Single Tear". The chain I got in New York City earlier this summer; it's gold-filled curb chain imported from Japan.

french cotton, vintage brass & gifted treasures

My friends Jacqui and Blair were lucky enough to go to Costa Rica this winter, where, among other things, they dug a cave in a sandstone cliff with their bare hands! Well, almost... Blair brought back lots of treasures, which he was kind enough to share with me. I decided to make a summer series of shell necklaces, one of which I gave to Jacqui, one I kept for myself and one you just might be getting for Christmas! The shells are threaded onto 30 inches of french cotton (coral and natural cotton colour) and accented with a single vintage faceted brass bead. The closure is one of my favourite things about these necklaces, so delicate. Now to figure out what to make for Blair! Happy long weekend!

new geo necklaces

Sadie geometric necklaces are finally available on Etsy! Until now these necklaces have been available exclusively at Fashionably Dead in Halifax, but they are now listed in our online shop as well. If you're in the Halifax area go see them in person, if not I hope you'll take a look online. They are based on hand drawings inspired by a landscape architecture studio project. Three different geometric pendants are available in natural birch or hand-finished summer oak stain with a 20" sterling silver or gold-filled chain.
